Can’t reject motor claims for want of PUC

Mumbai: The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) has said that insurers cannot reject motor claims on the grounds that the vehicle does not have a valid PUC (pollution under control) certificate. A statement has been issued by the insurance regulator to this effect on Wednesday.
In July 2018, following a Supreme Court order, Irdai had conveyed to insurance companies that they must ensure that any vehicle they cover must have a valid PUC certificate at the time of the policy. Insurers had protested that there is no central database where they could verify the PUC compliance.
Since then, the government has asked all PUC-certifying bodies to upload the certification online. On August 20, Irdai had reiterated the requirement of PUC for insurance through another circular.
“However, there are some misleading reports to the effect that if there is no valid PUC certificate at the time of the accident, claim under the motor insurance policy is not payable,” the regulator said. tnn
